    Owner Comments:
ONE OWNER, BLACK & GOLD 1977 PONTIAC FIREBIRD FORMULA 6.6...This 1977 Firebird Formula with a California only history, original blue/gold license plate with the original pink slip is waiting to sit in your garage! HISTORY OF CAR I traded a 1975 Corvette straight across to the dealer in Montclair, CA and drove this beautiful new car off the showroom floor. I have a Pontiac Historical Society (PHS) package which has a copy of the dealers (Royce Barnett) original invoice. I was at that time a manufacturing engineer for Hooker Headers Industries in Ontario, CA and we used this car as a model to manufacture and produce the headers for the “Formula” with a 403 OLDS engine 6.6 Liter and Nascar style aerodynamics. This car was the cover car for the Hooker Headers catalogue for the next 10 years. This car came from the factory in black and gold paint, bird on the hood and the Formula graphics on the rocker panels and rear spoiler. It also had Pontiac rally wheels. The dealer changed the wheels for the gold snowflake that are now on the car. Thankfully, because of working at Hooker Headers, I knew a lot of Nascar team members including several members of Richard Petty’s team. I had their help working on the car including redoing the suspension and tuning it up to Nascar standards. The car came with Rally Tuned Suspension (RTS) from the factory, but I have never driven a car that handles as well as this does. Equipped with the “Nascar Touch” from the pros we sponsored at Hookers Headers. We removed the decals at that time and custom painted the car in the same black and gold that the car came in. This car comes with 38 years of records; mostly minor maintenance to include oil changes, transmission service, starter, carb rebuild, a/c compressor, etc. I did the work on the heater core myself. The engine, trans, and rear end have never been apart and are number matching. The car has always been stored inside, never outside. This Smokey and the Bandit Poncho is a true survivor. I have driven it 175K miles exclusively and it is a real beauty. Without a doubt, the most reliable car I’ve ever owned. The steering box, front springs, rear springs, and front end were rebuilt along with anti- sway bars only about 3000 miles ago and the A/C was converted to 134 in the last couple of months. I repainted it the same black and gold scheme a few years ago, along with a new windshield and stereo. At the same time, the seats, carpet, and headliner were been redone in black just as it came from the factory. Also, at that time the undercarriage was rebuilt. The original spare un-inflated, no air bottle jack, and original radio are in the trunk plus a useable full- sized spare tire is included. Pontiac production numbers are all over the place in the Pontiac historical Society stats, and until my wife said you have too many cars, you need to sell some, I never researched this car. I was too busy showing off driving this beauty. If you Google 1977 Firebird Formula you will find an article dated August 2011/77/78 Pontiac Firebird Formula by David Traver Adolphus. In this article, there are copy righted production figures by expert, John Witzke. This is a Hemmings Motor News Article. Witzke writes: “there were only 4,849 Firebird Formulas produced in 1977 with 1735 being 4 speeds not allowed in CA, Colorado only, of those only 756 of the W72S model were automatic 350 transmissions with the 403 cubic inch Oldsmobile motor.” After reading this I realized why I could never find a car like mine for sale. Please read the article if interested or I can scan and send a copy upon request. This rare black beauty had only 755 Poncho relatives making it a very rare vehicle indeed. Who knows how many are even left in this exclusive family. This maybe your only opportunity to own one!
