The new owners - Barry and Sandra

On the block

Danny The Count Koker

“It was love at first sight,” she said. With a name like Sandra Truelove, she should know.

You have to see a photo to know what Sandra is talking about: “It was mostly the color that caught my eye.” Multiple sparkly colors in abstract designs plus “gold leaf and lots of hand painted detail like the roses in the center of the hood,” said the Palm Springs resident. It is a piece of art on wheels, displayed on a classic big fin 1961 Cadillac Coup de Ville, which she and her husband, Barry Silverman, purchased last November at the McCormick Palm Springs Collectable Car auction.

The car will be featured on “Counting Cars” TV show with Danny Koker on the History Channel on Wednesday, June 24. The story details the car’s restoration from the ground up to its sale at the Palm Springs auction.

Koker is famous for finding old clunkers and restoring them in his Las Vegas shop to beyond-showroom condition, which he documents in the TV series. For this show, he decided to sell the car at the Palm Springs auction last November, which was also filmed and featured in the upcoming TV episode.

Why Palm Springs?

“My parents brought me to the McCormick auction when I was a teenager,” Koker said. “Some of the cars we bought then are sill in my collection today. This auction brings back really good memories.”

Keith McCormick, who has conducted the auctions in Palm Springs for more than 30 years, said he remembers young Danny Koker and his parents attending the auctions years ago when it was held at the Riviera Hotel. “They would buy a car every time and drive it back to Las Vegas,” McCormick said.

A head turner

“Driving on Palm Canyon, people honk their horns, give us thumbs up and the peace sign,” Truelove said. When parked on the streets of Palm Springs, “People stop and take pictures of it. Guys that know about Koker’s TV show really go crazy and look for his hidden signature on the car.” She said much of the value of the car is in the paint.

More than a fancy paint job, the Cadillac’s engine was rebuilt. The power steering, radiator and other parts under the hood were replaced or restored. Even the bumpers received new chrome.

For their love of cars, Barry said “I have bought five cars at the McCormick auction in the past four years and sold two of them. If you buy a new car, you lose money.” The couple shares a passion for older cars.

Barry planned to buy the Cadillac for Sandra as a birthday surprise, so he found a place away from her to secretly bid on the car during the auction. What he didn’t know was that Sandra was also bidding on the car, actually competing against each other. That’s a story of true love.
